Who will be the leader in the field of Virtual reality in 10 years?

My bet is on Facebook. Since Virtual Reality is a tougher nut to crack when it comes to adoption, it will take a couple of more years to become mainstream.

However, Facebook already has the entrance into our lives. Almost every one of us has a Facebook account, with Instagram Facebook is destroying Snapchat and with the acquisition of Oculus, and Spatial Audio companies I believe the next big thing in Social VR.

The first picture that pops into my mind is Oasis from Ready Player One (by Ernest Cline). Oasis is a Virtual World where all players come to socialize and participate in games.

If you look at the gaming industry - the VR industry is already Booming. It is progressing so fast it has even surprised one of the top VR providers -> Sony

Playstation VR Sales Beat Even Sony’s Expectations

How Impressive Are Sony's 'Surprise' PlayStation VR Sales, Really?

Playstation VR isn’t a comfortable headset and its technical capabilities are subpar to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. But it has a massive advantage in other segments:

  • Playstation is already in many households across the US. Playstation VR feels like an upgrade of the gaming console. If you want to use HTC/Oculus you have to spend a lot of $$$ for the headsets and probably another grand for upgrading your PC rig.
  • Playstation VR had fun games immediately upon release. If you remember the first couple of years the audience was starving for good content. Imagine having the most amazing Sound System sitting in your living room, but you don’t have any music to listen to?
  • Multiplayer. All amazing experiences are shared, whether with virtual buddies or with friends in your living room. Playstation catered to both occasions.

In a couple of more years, better content and headset iterations, and gaming will progress even faster. In the meantime, Facebook is going to build an Oasis.
