The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset developed and manufactured by Oculus VR. It is the first to kick start consumer-targeted virtual reality headsets. The Rift uses an OLED panel for each eye, each having a resolution of 1080×1200. These panels have a refresh rate of 90 Hz, rather than scanning out in lines. They also use low persistence, which means that they only display an image for 2 milliseconds of each frame. This combination of the high refresh rate, global refresh, and low persistence means that the user experiences none of the motion blurring or judder that is experienced on a regular monitor.
Oculus is mainly a gaming device. We can port already installed games from a fixed camera to a VR; however, the best virtual reality games are those that are designed for the Rift from the beginning.
Oculus has an application that allows the Rift to be used to watch movies and videos and it gives the user the perception of viewing the content on a cinema-sized screen. Using one of several media viewer apps available the movie would be presented on a virtual screen floating in front of you. You can configure the size and distance. Stereo content is presented in 3D and the experience is similar to watching a 3D movie in a cinema hall. 180 and 360-degree video is much more engaging in VR. Not only can the Oculus Rift be used to watch 3D films, but also it can be used to simulate the entire theatre experience.
Download and install VLC Player
Download and install VR Player
Download the DK2 Tracker for motion tracking within the player
Expand the .zip and copy to the location where you have installed VR Player.
Open up the VR player and set the tracker
Set up Oculus as an extended Desktop in the Rift Display Mode program.
For 3D movies:
Menu - Media - Format - Side By Side
Menu - Media - Projection - Plane
If your movie is not 3D
Menu - Media - Format - Mono
Menu - Media - Projection - Plane
To open a movie select:
Menu - File - Open File - With VLC
Browse your selected movie.
Now that the movie is running you need to move the video screen onto your Oculus screen.
